The Challenge

From leisure craft to fishing boats, river going ski racing boats and the offshore open ocean racing monsters Mercury have motors for most types of boats. It is a competitive market though so how do they differentiate themselves?

That was the question they were asking when they visited our Melbourne showroom to check out some kiosks. They had some ideas but upon walking into the showroom the Skape 42 kiosk captured their eye immediately. They wanted a high impact presence in the dealer network and at the many boat shows they do across Australia to showcase their innovative and world class products.

The Solution

The hardware decision was an easy one as the Mercury team had fallen in love with the Skape as soon as they saw it. The complete solution though entailed their web based content to be displayed securely along with safe transportation between the dealerships and boat shows, and a vinyl wrap to really make the kiosks pop and advertise the Mercury Marine brand. The transport issue was sorted with custom travel cases that allow for easy transportation and a tough exterior to protect the kiosks… and the vinyl wrap you can see for yourself below.

On the content side, we set each kiosk up to automatically turn on and launch into a browser lockdown program each time it was plugged in to a power point. That way, the staff at a dealership or a boat show did not need to do anything or worry about technical set up as it was all done. The browser lockdown program ensures that the kiosk is always in the URL (web address) that it is supposed to be in. And when not in use it plays promotional videos or looping images until someone touches the screen, at which point it launches into the desired URL.

The other issue was that Mercury wanted 3 URLs, one for the Mercury Australia website, one for a Mercury dealer portal that comes from Mercury USA, and one for the dealership. We built them a custom landing page with all three links in large touch buttons so that the user could select any of the three, and we also built a custom toolbar at the top of the touch screen where the user could return themselves to the initial landing page. All in all a very neat solution and one that helps Mercury Marine stand out from the crowd, both in their dealerships and at trade shows!
